Top 10 Gwynedd landmarks - Number eight: The Caernarfon harbour wall and Anglesey Arms pub

Caernarfon harbour wall and the Anglesey Arms pub
We might not have had the weather for it yet but there are few better things to do when the sun is shining than grab a pint from the Anglesey Arms and sit outside on the harbour wall.

And that is why this slightly abstract choice of landmark features on my top 10 list.

It's not just me who is drawn to this part of town in the height of summer - it's half the people in Gwynedd. Well, that's what it feels like.

A good summer's day can attract hundreds to the pub and people are usually spread along the wall from the floating restaurant, right up the prom, and almost as far as the end of Eastgate Street.

In my more sprightly days, I used to jog around the Foryd and can clearly remember the first time I caught sight of this spectacle. I thought: "That's the place to be" and it wasn't long before I'd hung up my running shoes and joined the crowd for that summertime diversion instead.

When the weather is at it's best, better views than that across the Menai Strait from Caernarfon are rare indeed and this blend of sunshine, booze and an hypnotic visage makes for a heady, almost dreamy experience.

What's the harbour wall when the sun isn't shining? It's just a wall.

But the atmosphere often makes the landmark. Next time the weather's good, get down there. Become part of the landscape. It's not the same without you.
